Avoiding Travel Headaches – Ways To Identify Your Luggage

by Grace Jennings

In order to get the most enjoyment when you travel, consider planning ahead for ways to identify your luggage once you reach your destination. Keeping track of your bags at the airport, train station or at the cruise ship dock is an important component of a successful travel experience. It can be difficult to sort your baggage from the rest of the travelers since so many luggage sets and suitcases are virtually identical in style, size and color. Just look around the next time you’re waiting at the airport baggage carousel and count how many black canvas bags you see. It would be pretty easy to mistake someone else’s bag for your own or vice versa, especially when everyone’s in a hurry to get on with their trip.

If you are in the market to purchase new luggage, consider getting something a bit offbeat. While it’s impossible to be completely unique unless you have a custom design, you can move away from the standard black or brown bags most people gravitate toward. For the more creative types perhaps bold patterns or bright colors will do the trick. Of course, this strategy isn’t for everyone.

Prepare First To Avoid Losing Your Luggage

One way you can make your luggage stand out is to tie a ribbon or scarf which is brightly colored or features a distinctive pattern. This, of course can work against you if others on your flight had the same idea. Always double check your luggage tags, even if you think no one else could possibly have a neon green ribbon on their suitcase.

Another problem with ribbons or scarves is that they could become caught on something during the handling process. Not only can this slow down or damage the handling equipment, your luggage identification may become damaged or removed completely. If you still want to use this strategy, make sure you also include an actual tag listing all of your contact information.

Additionally, you should put your contact information inside each bag. If your luggage is lost or switched with that of another traveler, this can help your bags find their way back to you. And if your luggage tags should somehow come off in transit, you can then prove your ownership of your luggage to airport personnel.

One of the best ways to ensure that your luggage does not get lost is personalized luggage tags, which a growing number of travelers are opting for. Many different designs and colors are available, making it easier to identify your luggage in a crowded airport. Embroidered luggage tags are one kind which is particularly popular. You do want to try to find the most unusual luggage tags you can as this makes it highly unlikely your bags will be mistaken for another’s. If you have ways to identify your luggage quickly, you can get out of the baggage claim and off to the beach or wherever you happen to be going.
