A SoCal Surf Town Lost In Time – Encinitas

Posted on November 3, 2009

Encinitas has a different vibe than any of the beach towns north of San Diego – but what is it that makes it so captivating, so special? Many feel its because Encinitas is still lost in time back in the 1960s when California was a much simpler place with small roadside motels along Highway 101. Encinitas hotels didn’t exist back in the 60s, nor were there any Encinitas Bed and Breakfasts or hotels in Del Mar or the Cardiff Lodge.

Encinitas is still home to tiny roadside motels and hotels dating to the 1950’s. You’ll find a surf shop on every block. At the Roxy Restaurant you can enjoy a glass of rum and an ice cream cone. Encinitas is home to world famous Moonlight Beach and romantic Encinitas bed and breakfasts – that’s why it’s been called “San Diego’s Coolest Beach Town.”

Business people and surfers alike line up at Juanita’s Taco Shop for lunch. The wide sidewalks along the historic Old Highway U.S. 101 in downtown Encinitas is jam-packed with outdoor restaurants. Tourists and kids can be seen walking around downtown barefoot in swim suits while other are waxing down their surfboards for a session at Moonlight Beach before heading back to their Encinitas Bed & Breakfast or Del Mar Inn near the beach.

Moonlight Beach has the best of San Diego beaches and is an easy walk from the Inn At Moonlight Beach Bed and Breakfast Inn. It’s a great spot to soak up some sun, enjoy a game of pickup volleyball, have a picnic or cookout at the big fire-rings, try your hand at surfing or boogie-boarding, body surf, read a book, people watch or just kick back and “chill.” You won’t find a better beach in Encinitas to work on your tan.

Ann Dunham is the hostess of the romantic Encinitas B&B (Bed and Breakfast) called the Inn At Moonlight Beach. This lovely boutique inn is far more intimate than a Del Mar B&B or Encinitas hotel. The inn is situated on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Moonlight Beach and is often called the San Diego Beach Bed and Breakfast, said to be more romantic than Del Mar Hotels and more lovely than the Carlsbad Bed and Breakfasts.

The Inn At Moonlight Beach has only 4 rooms, each decorated like an Italian seaside hotel. All the rooms have a refrigerator and free wi-fi. There are boogie boards and beach umbrellas waiting for you to hit the beach and ride the waves. What makes this Encinitas bed & breakfast really special is that Ann bakes her own pastries for you each morning.

Terry Hunefeld retired as CEO of a San Diego coaching company to follow his love of exploring the ocean to study seabirds and marine animals. Hunefeld and his wife Ann Dunham own the Inn At Moonlight Beach in Encinitas near Del Mar and San Diego. For more information visit: Solana Beach Hotels or Carlsbad B&B.
